About Us

Aloha and welcome to Hilo Bay Paddler. I started canoe paddling in Hilo Bay about 20 or so years ago. We made our own paddles back then and there was never a store specifically available to purchase paddling accessories. We would paddle with these heavy home made paddles for every race. And maybe one or two of us would have a pair of padded paddling shorts. It was at the State races that we would purchase new paddles or find paddling shorts and suits that we could choose from.

As the years went on, paddling started to change; lighter paddles and sporty accessories started to show up. Certain stores started carrying these items and it was always fun to go and ' look ' at what there was to buy. Again, it was at the State Races where you could find all there was to use for paddling.

Hilo Bay Paddler StorefrontGrowing up in Hilo and watching the Downtown start to rejuvenate, I knew that I wanted to open up a store that was unique for Hilo. I waited for the perfect place to become available and that is where I am today; in the heart of Historic downtown Hilo on Furneaux Lane.

I have been paddling here in Hilo with Puna Canoe Club for over 14 years.
I started out paddling as a stroker and then while pregnant with our oldest daughter I started to learn how to steer. Paddling was a great way to get back into shape. Then three years later, we were blessed with another beautiful daughter. Still trying to stay in shape. Both girls are my inspiration.

I love the sport of paddling and being able to continue to paddle or steer a canoe has been an incredible challenge that has taught me the greatest value of leadership, trust, and the art of being humble.

I take these values and use them every day. And that is what makes Hilo Bay Paddler.

Hut, hut, ho..
See you on the water.
